How to Choose an Activity
By age
Most activities fit ages 3 to 5. Use the easier version for 3-year-olds, and the harder one for children who are ready for more.
By time
Short on time? Pick activities marked 5 to 10 minutes. A few minutes of focused play is enough.
By mess level
Each activity shows a mess rating. Choose Low on busy days, and save High-mess activities for outdoors or bath time.
By goal
Working on writing? Try fine motor. Need to burn energy? Try movement. Big feelings? Try social and emotional activities.
Activity Safety Basics
- Supervise every activity. Young children should never be left alone with water, food, small items, or craft supplies.
- Small parts: the CPSC advises avoiding toys with small parts for children younger than 3. Choose large items that can’t fit in a child’s mouth.
- Balloons: the CPSC warns that children under 8 can choke or suffocate on uninflated or broken balloons. Pick up pieces right away.
- Magnets: avoid small magnets for children under 6, since swallowed magnets can cause serious injury.
- Water beads: the CPSC warns against giving water beads to children. We recommend skipping them.
- Raw dough: the FDA has warned against raw flour dough for play. Use store-bought or stove-cooked playdough.
- Water: stay within arm’s reach of your child near any water, even a small tub.

Preschool Activity FAQs
How long should a preschool activity last?
Plan 5 to 15 minutes. The CDC lists paying attention for 5 to 10 minutes as typical at age 5, so short and playful works best. Stop when your child loses interest and try again later.
How many activities should we do each day?
One or two guided activities, plus plenty of free play, outdoor time, and reading, is plenty. There is no need to fill the whole day.
Do I need to buy special supplies?
No. Most activities use household items like paper, crayons, cups, cardboard, and food. Each activity lists exactly what you need.
Are these activities okay for 3-year-olds?
Most are, with adult help. Use the ‘make it easier’ version, choose large pieces, and skip anything with small parts or a safety note until your child no longer puts things in their mouth.
What if my child loses interest?
That’s normal. Switch activities, shorten the time, or let your child lead. Interest matters more than finishing.
